Jill Fertel brings eleven years of litigation experience to the firm. Jill concentrates her legal practice in the areas of premises liability and premises security for one of the nation’s largest retailers. Jill manages her own caseload and handles all aspects of her cases including discovery, motion practice, arbitration and trial.

Prior to joining McDonnell & Associates, Jill was an Assistant District Attorney at the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office for nearly eleven years. Jill was assigned to major trials for the East and Southwest divisions where she successfully tried hundreds of complex and challenging cases. Jill served in the office’s Hate Crimes Task Force, working to identify bias-motivated and hate crimes and build community engagement.

Jill has also worked as an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, teaching a popular trial advocacy based evidence course. Jill created a practical curriculum and authored her own course materials.

Jill is a graduate of The George Washington University Law School where she was a Thurgood Marshall Scholar. While at law school, Jill worked as a research assistant for noted forensic scientist and legal scholar James E. Starrs. She also worked as a legislative and legal advocate for victims of crime.

Jill received a Bachelors Degree in Biology from Syracuse University in 2004 where she was on the Dean’s List. Jill was also Vice President of Students for the Advancement of Sexual Safety and Equality.

As an Assistant District Attorney, Jill successfully prosecuted hundreds of jury and waiver trials in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Jill’s practice focused on violent offenders and bias-motivated crimes.

Jill successfully prosecuted two co-defendants in a series of nine bias-motivated home invasion gunpoint robberies targeting Chinese-American Immigrants. In recognition of the heinous nature of these offenses, the defendants were sentenced to thirty to sixty years in prison.

Jill successfully prosecuted two co-defendants in a complex kidnapping scheme in which a victim was lured to Philadelphia, bound, pistol whipped, and terrorized before escaping captivity. After a month-long trial, the jury found both defendants guilty. The defendants were sentenced to ten to twenty years and twenty to forty years, respectively.

Jill successfully prosecuted a serial offender accused of the attempted murder of a rival drug dealer. Despite an initial delay in cooperation and ongoing intimidation of the victim and his family, the jury returned a verdict of guilty. The defendant was ultimately sentenced to serve twenty to forty years in prison.
